BERLIN : Calls for a blanket ban of Russia in sport grew louder on Sunday with Germany's elite athletes' grouping demanding tougher sanctions and the International Paralympic Committee set to discuss Russia ahead of next week's Beijing Paralympics.
Bosses at the Newcastle Eagles have supported a decision made by the Home Secretary to cancel the visas of the Belarusian men's basketball team who were due to play an important fixture in Newcastle on Monday.
Russia became further isolated from the Western world Friday as sports bodies cancelled events planned in the country and some shops pulled Russian products from their shelves.
The IBU have chosen to ban representation of Russian and Belarusian symbols at forthcoming events, but will allow athletes to compete. Instead of competing under their national status they will be present as neutral athletes, and face a number of restrictions.

Polish footballer Robert Lewandowski on Saturday backed the Polish FA's decision to not play their 2022 FIFA World Cup play-off with Russia in Moscow on March 24. The winners of Poland vs Russia are due to play Sweden or Czech Republic for a place in the finals. Cezary Kulesz, the president of the Polish football federation said on Twitter: "No more words, it's time to act. Due to the escalation of the aggression of the Russian Federation towards Ukraine, the Polish national team does not intend to play the play-off match against Russia."
