PARIS : Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine goes against the Olympic spirit and the time will come to decide on his country's participation in the Paris 2024 Games, city Mayor Anne Hidalgo said on Wednesday.
The International Olympic Committee has always been political, from the sheikhs and royals in its membership to a seat at the United Nations to pushing for peace talks between the Koreas. But Russia's invasion of Ukraine three weeks ago exposed its irreconcilable claims of "political neutrality."
Victoria Azarenka has deleted her social media accounts after she broke down in tears during her third round match against Elina Rybakina at Indian Wells. The Belarusian, who was playing under a neutral flag due to sanctions against Russia and Belarus, lost the first set 6-3 before she squatted down and burst into tears while she was serving at 2-2 in the second set. She said to the chair umpire: «I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.» Ad/> Rybakina walked to the net to check if her opponent was OK at the same time the chair umpire approached her.
Former world No. 31 Sergiy Stakhovsky has hit out at Tottenham boss Antonio Conte for saying that banning Russian athletes from sporting events is “very sad” and “not fair”. Several sports organisations have banned Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing at events.
FIDE on Wednesday suspended Russia and Belarus from all its tournaments until further notice due to the invasion of Ukraine, jeopardising the two countries' participation in the 44th Chess Olympiad in India later this year. FIDE, however, said in individual tournaments of the World Championship cycle, players from these two countries can participate under the world body's flag.
