NEW YORK : A first-time U.S. Open women's champion will be crowned on Saturday and world number one Iga Swiatek said all four semi-finalists deserve to be there.
NEW YORK: Iga Swiatek’s game is most effective, her mind most at ease, on red clay courts, where her two Grand Slam titles so far arrived.
The Belarusian underestimated her opponent in their two meetings last year, when Pliskova defeated her in the Wimbledon and Montreal semi-finals, but she was in dominant form in New York as she fired down seven aces and never dropped serve. "Always tough matches against Karolina," said Sabalenka. "The first set was really high level for me and (I) put a lot of pressure on her." Nothing went right for 2016 finalist Pliskova during the first set as she racked up 15 unforced errors and five double faults in 28 minutes. But the Czech's form improved considerably in the second set as she fended off the only break point she faced in the eighth game.
NEW YORK : World number one Iga Swiatek overcame a shaky serving performance to beat American Jessica Pegula 6-3 7-6(4) on Wednesday and reach the semi-finals of the U.S. Open for the first time.
NEW YORK : Wimbledon's decision to ban Belarusian athletes from this year's grasscourt major gave Aryna Sabalenka extra motivation to do well at this month's U.S. Open.
NEW YORK — Aryna Sabalenka returned to the US Open semifinals Wednesday with a 6-1, 7-6 (4) victory over Karolina Pliskova.
Aryna Sabalenka reached the US Open semi-finals for a second successive year on Wednesday with a 6-1, 7-6 (7/4) win over Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic. The 24-year-old from Belarus will face either world number one and French Open champion Iga Swiatek or Jessica Pegula of the United States for a place in Saturday's final. World number six Sabalenka, also a Wimbledon semi-finalist in 2021, fired seven aces and a total of 30 winners past Pliskova, the 2016 runner-up in New York, without facing a break point.
Ottawa's Gabriela Dabrowski and Mexican partner Giuliana Olmos have been bounced from the U.S. Open.
