NEW YORK: World No. 1 Iga Swiatek defeated Aryna Sabalenka in three sets to set up a US Open final showdown with Ons Jabeur on Thursday.
After a sluggish start, the Pole came alive in the second set and overcame an early break in the decider by winning the final four games to see off the powerful Belarusian. Iga Swiatek roared back from a set down, and then a break down in the final set, to beat Aryna Sabalenka, 3-6 6-1 6-4, and seal her place in the US Open final. The top seed and world No. 1 was overpowered in the opening set as she struggled to find her timing from the back of the court, but she responded magnificently in the second before winning the decider.
She was away from the Tour for almost two months — June and July. When she started in San Jose in August, she took her time finding her feet despite the work she had put in on the practice courts. Sabalenka, the world No. 6, spent weeks working on her game, calling it ‘another pre-season’. Her gym in Miami, where she spent long hours preparing for the American hard-court swing, was telecasting Wimbledon. Sabalenka turned off the television each time she entered the facility.
