Britain and the Czech Republic joined the United States and Ireland in boycotting amateur boxing world championships on Tuesday amid mounting concern about the Russian-led sport's Olympic future.
Boxing is not on the initial programme for the 2028 Los Angeles Games, pending reforms demanded by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). And the International Boxing Association (IBA) was stripped of involvement in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.The IOC in December last year has also raised the possibility of boxing being excluded from the 2024 Paris Games, accusing the IBA of having "no real interest" in the sport or its athletes. Qualifying for the Paris Games is being organised by the IOC.The IBA, which is backed by Russian energy firm Gazprom, has also reversed bans on boxers from Russia and Belarus competing with national flags and anthems despite the war in Ukraine.

Russian athletes should publicly denounce the war if they are to be allowed to participate in the 2024 Olympics, Kyiv mayor and former world boxing champion Vitali Klitschko told AFP Monday. "Russian and Belarusian athletes can't participate in the Olympic Games in Paris if they don't say 'no' to war," Klitschko said. "If they publicly express against this war, they can (participate). But they're afraid," the former heavyweight boxer said. Russia and its ally Belarus, which allowed its territory to be used as a launchpad when Moscow began its invasion of Ukraine last February, have been sidelined from most Olympic sports since the war began.
Insisting sports had to respect the human rights of all athletes, International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach on Sunday denied the organization was on the wrong side of history by helping Russians and Belarusians qualify for the 2024 Paris Summer Games.
