CAPE TOWN : South Africa on Thursday called up batsman Khaya Zondo to their test team for a two-match series against Bangladesh but have been forced to name a weakened 15-man squad.
Khaya Zondo, Daryn Dupavillon and Lizaad Williams were the fresh faces in the Proteas Test squad that's shorn of its Indian Premier League players for the Bangladesh red-ball engagement at the end of the month.
After registering a two-wicket victory over New Zealand in the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup 2022 on Thursday at Seddon Park, South Africa consolidated their position at number two in the points table. The Sune Luus-led side remains unbeaten in the tournament so far and they now have eight points from four games. On the other hand, New Zealand remained static at the fourth spot with four points from five games. India are at the third spot in the points table with four points from four games. The Mitali Raj-led side will now square off against Australia on Saturday.
Bangladesh have lost every match across all formats that they have played in South Africa - but go into a one-day series against the Proteas on Friday with reasonable hopes of ending the drought. The series opens with a day-night game at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Friday. Bangladesh have a settled one-day side and currently are on top of the International Cricket Council's World Cup Super League, while South Africa are languishing in tenth place.
It is tempting to think that there is more professional international cricket currently being played than at any other time during the history of the game.
