'Quality' Afghanistan ready for Asia Cup heavyweights

Afghanistan is ready for the big guns after they became the first team to qualify for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup following victories over Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. "As a team in this Asia Cup we are showing that Afghanistan have quality batsmen, quality bowlers and quality fielders," said all-rounder Nabi after Afghanistan thrashed Bangladesh by seven wickets on Tuesday. "In these two games we showed we can chase totals. Earlier opposition used to say that Afghanistan cannot chase. "But we were quite good (in the two chases), were not under pressure and had proper balance and hopefully we do well in the next round against big teams," added the 37-year-old. Afghanistan's victory over Bangladesh in Sharjah put them into the next round of the six-nation Twenty20 tournament.

Watch: Mayanti Langer Trolls Sanjay Manjrekar With Ravindra Jadeja Quip

Ever since Sanjay Manjrekar's "bits and pieces cricketer" comment on Ravindra Jadeja, the former India batter often finds himself at the end of a few jokes whenever the star all-rounder performs well. To Manjrekar's credit, he himself takes it on the chin and even asked Jadeja after India's win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup on Sunday if he was "okay" to talk to him. Jadeja too laughed in response and said he had no problem, with both of them seemingly having put the episode behind them.

Asia Cup 2022: Time for coaches to pick formats too?

Sriram says all-format coaching is very difficult in packed scheduleDUBAI: With a packed international calendar and three different formats jostling for relevance and financial viability, cricketers have already started to pick and choose their formats. Quinton de Kock abruptly called it quits in Test cricket earlier in the year and Ben Stokes ruffled a lot of feathers when he decided to give up ODIs last month. It's clear that cricket is slowly headed towards three types of international players to suit each format of the game, leading to another question: should coaches too pick their formats? Former India cricketer turned coach Sridharan Sriram, who is a technical consultant to the Bangladesh team for the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup, feels the time will soon come when format-specific coaching will become the norm.
