MS Dhoni's rise started a new chapter in Indian cricket. The youngster from Ranchi, Jharkhand, who rose to become a giant in world cricket is an inspiration to many. A few months before Dhoni's debut for India in December, 2004, against Bangladesh, another wicketkeeper-batter started his journey for the Men in Blue. His name was Dinesh Karthik. He made his debut in an ODI against England at Lord's in September, 2004. However, Dhoni's dominance was such that Karthik soon became an understudy of the former India skipper.
Veteran drag flicker Rupinder Pal Singh, who recently came out of retirement, will lead India at the Asia Cup as Hockey India on Monday announced a 20-member team for the upcoming tournament in Jakarta. The prestigious event, which will be held from May 23 to June 1, is a World Cup qualifier. Senior players like Manpreet Singh, Harmanpreet Singh and PR Sreejesh will give the tournament a miss.
Proteas opener Laura Wolvaardt's batting heroics took SA to the brink of winning the ICC T20 Women's World Cup, where they fell 19 runs shy of beating Australia in the final at Newlands in Cape Town.
Seasoned India leg-spinner Poonam Yadav believes the Women's Premier League (WPL) will not just provide a great opportunity to senior players to come back into national reckoning, it will also be a boon for young players to learn from international stars. The Delhi Capitals player, who is hoping to take the WPL route to regain her place in the national side, added the tournament will take Indian women's cricket to the next level. The 31-year-old last played for India in an ODI against Bangladesh in March last year and was bought by the Delhi franchise for the inaugural WPL edition for Rs 30 lakh.
If the Proteas had somehow found a way over the line in their T20 World Cup final against Australia at Newlands on Sunday, they would have had Laura Wolvaardt to thank.
Batting sensation Azam Khan continues to hog limelight with his attacking game play. The right-handed power-hitter struck an imposing 42-ball 97 in his side Islamabad United's Pakistan Super League game against Quetta Gladiators on Friday. His innings was laced with eight sixes and nine fours. While being compared to another T20 star Suryakumar Yadav, Azam Khan said that not the India star, but Australian cricketer Tim David is his inspiration. The Pakistani star reasoned that he relates his game more to David as the two come out to bat at similar positions in franchise cricket.
India batter KL Rahul is going through a lean patch with the bat in Test cricket. India's ongoing Test series against Australia saw the batter failing to score big across three innings of the first two matches. The player has been kept in the squad for the ongoing series despite his poor form, but the the designation of vice-captain has been removed from his name. While BCCI announced the squad for the remaining two Test matches against Australia, its release didn't have the post of vice-captain next to Rahul's name. Speculations are rife that Rahul has been sacked from the post and Shubman Gill will be included in the playing XI in his place. Whether Rahul could keep his spot or not it will all be clear by March 1, the day the third Test kicks off at the Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore.
