DHAKA : Bangladesh will be without their most prolific one-day batter Tamim Iqbal at the World Cup after a persistent back injury dashed the opener's hopes of playing in the showpiece event in India beginning on Oct. 5.
Bangladesh on Tuesday announced their 15-man squad for the ODI World Cup in India, leaving out former captain Tamim Iqbal due to injury concerns. Tamim, 34, who retired in a shock move in July before reversing his decision a day later at the request of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, returned to the side only last week for the opening two matches of the just-concluded home series against New Zealand. Tamim established himself as one of the country's most dependable players and is the only Bangladeshi to score centuries in all three formats of the game.
New Zealand gave themselves a perfect boost ahead of the World Cup by whitewashing Bangladesh in the three-match series 2-0, with a seven wickets win in the final one-day international in Dhaka on Tuesday. Will Young and Adam Milne starred with bat and ball respectively, with Young hitting 70 off 80 balls to guide New Zealand to 175-3. Milne's 4-34 restricted the hosts to 171 in 34.3 overs at Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. Stand-in skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto scored highest with 76 runs for Bangladesh, but was unable to give the hosts a competitive score with a lack of support from the other end after he opted to bat first.
Tim Southee will be part of New Zealand's squad at next month's World Cup after progressing in his recovery from a thumb injury, the country's cricket board (NZC) said on Tuesday, adding that Kyle Jamieson would travel to India as a "contingency".
Bangladesh batter Mushfiqur Rahim got dismissed in a bizarre manner that left the social media stunned during the third one-day international against New Zealand at Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday. During the 16th over of the Bangladesh innings, Mushfiqur chopped a delivery from Lockie Ferguson towards his stumps and in desperation to stop himself from getting dismissed, he decided to kick the ball away. However, before he could complete the save, the ball crashed into the stumps and he ended up disturbing them even more with his boots. There was slight confusion regarding the nature of the dismissal but it was given bowled by the umpires.
The Indian football team held its first training session in Hangzhou before their round of 16 match at the Asian Games. "Finally got done with the first training session with our boys, enjoying beautiful facilities in Hangzhou. Only in the city they have 29 new stadiums and in the region 41. It's amazing what China has done for football infrastructure to grow the sport," India Head Coach Igor Stimac wrote on X. Stimac earlier appreciated the Blue Tigers for qualifying to the round of 16 of the tournament even after completing their recovery sessions at a park in China.
