Najmul Hossain Shanto Puts Bangladesh In Control Against New Zealand

Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto hit his third Test century in four innings to put Bangladesh on course for a strong total in the second innings of the first Test against New Zealand in Sylhet on Thursday. The hosts reached 212-3 at stumps on the third day, leading New Zealand by 205 runs, with Najmul unbeaten on 104. Former captain Mushfiqur Rahim made an unbeaten 43 and put on 96 runs in the unbroken fourth-wicket stand with Najmul. Najmul, who scored a century in both innings of Bangladesh's previous Test against Afghanistan in June, also shared 90 runs with Mominul Haque for the third wicket. The left-hander has now become the first Bangladeshi cricketer to score a hundred on his debut as Test captain. He took his hundred, his fourth in Tests, with a single off Ajaz Patel in 191 balls before signing off the day in style with a boundary in the last ball.

New Zealand Test skipper and pacer Tim Southee completed 2,000 Test runs on Wednesday and joined legendary all-rounders Richard Hadlee and Daniel Vettori in an elite company. Southee reached the milestone during the first Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand at Sylhet. In Kiwis' first innings, he scored 35 runs off 62 balls. His knock consisted of three boundaries. Southee has played 95 Tests, scoring 2,011 runs at an average of 16.21, with six half-centuries in 135 innings. His best score is 77*. The Kiwi veteran joined Hadlee and Vettori to become the third player from his country to have 2,000-plus Test runs and 300-plus wickets. Hadlee represented the Kiwis in 86 Tests, taking 431 wickets and also scoring 3,124 runs at an average of 27.16, with two centuries and 15 fifties.

Kane Williamson struck a defiant century Wednesday but was unable to put New Zealand in control in the first Test against Bangladesh in Sylhet. Williamson hit 104 off 205 balls in his 29th Test century with 11 fours, before Taijul Islam broke through his defence to bowl out the right-hander. "I mean, you just see all around the world, he's amazing and how he sort of works out different attacks, different sort of ways people are trying to get him out, different surfaces," New Zealand coach Luke Ronchi said in praise of Williamson. "So to be able to do it the way he does and the calmness he shows in situations is awesome," Ronchi added. "He's done it a lot, but a lot of our young guys can see how he does it."

In the 39th over of the Bangladesh innings, Ajaz was bowling the fifth ball when he pulled back his action midway and realised in the follow-up that Mominul was already outside his crease at the non-striker's end. Ajaz then pointed that out, giving a warning to the batter.
