Teenaged Grandmaster D Gukesh has replaced the legendary Viswanathan Anand as India's top chess player after more than three decades. Anand has been India's No.1 since July 1986. The 17-year old Chennai GM, who recently lost in the quarterfinals of the FIDE World Cup in Baku to Magnus Carlsen, moved ahead of Anand to be ranked No.8 in the world. Gukesh broke into the top 10 of the FIDE rating list for the first time. Anand, a five-time world champion is currently ranked No.9.

India chess prodigy and FIDE World Cup 2023 runner-up Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin in Chennai in Chennai on Wednesday. Praggnanandhaa returned to India today after enjoying a successful campaign in the FIDE World Cup 2023 in Baku, Azerbaijan, where he went toe to toe with the Top 3 chess players in the world. The young chess grandmaster was received with a rousing welcome on his arrival at the Chennai Airport. Outside the Airport, students were ween waiving the tricolour and some of them were holding banners of 'World Cup Runner Up' to welcome the Indian prodigy.
A chess great in the making, R Praggnanandhaa made every Indian proud as he bagged the silver medal in the 2023 FIDE World Cup, and entered the FIDE Candidates tournament. Despite losing the final to World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, Praggnanandhaa received praise from all across the country for his performance in the World Cup. As he returned from Baku, Praggnanahdaa was accorded a rousing reception upon his arrival at the airport in Chennai Wednesday.
