Red Bull teammates Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez have played tug-of-war for supremacy at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in recent years. Pérez won the race in 2021, Verstappen snatched it back in 2022, and Pérez returned to the winner's circle last season. The pair will duke it out again this week as Formula 1 returns to Baku. Verstappen looks to retain his stranglehold on the top spot in the 2024 drivers' championship standings. The three-time defending champion has a 62-point lead on Lando Norris with eight races to go. Pérez sits in seventh place.
Indian Formula 2 driver Kush Maini suffered a massive crash at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix F2 feature race on Sunday. With his car stalled on the grid, a lot of cars managed to evade Maini, before he was slammed into by a car from behind causing a huge crash and immediately bringing out the red flag. Thankfully, Maini and all the drivers involved in the incident managed to walk away safe.
Title-chasing McLaren driver Lando Norris remained hopeful of success on Saturday despite qualifying in a lowly 17th place for Sunday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Briton, knocked out of the first qualifying session for the first time since the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix, lost his best lap when he eased off due to a yellow flag, but said he would do his best to limit damage to his championship challenge. Norris is 62 points behind three-time champion and series leader Max Verstappen of Red Bull with eight races, and three sprint races, remaining with the Dutchman qualifying in sixth place for Sunday's race.
