Team India started its training session ahead of the three-match T20I series against Australia that is slated to kick off on September 20 in Mohali. Ahead of the first game, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav were spotted playing some classy shots during the net sessions. Both Kohli and Suryakumar were batting next to each other in the nets, showcasing their shots in what was the first practice session for the Indian team ahead of the first T20I against Australia. Punjab Cricket Association shared the video with the caption: "An absolute treat. Watch @imVkohli dedicatedly practicing his shots in the nets today during practice session."
With Mohammed Shami ruled out of India's three-match T20I series against Australia with COVID-19, 34-year-old Umesh Yadav got a surprise call-up to the squad as the replacement player. Umesh Yadav has played just seven T20Is, with his last appearance for India in the shortest format coming in 2019. With several young options in the wings, and the likes of Mohammed Siraj fit and available, Umesh's selection raised some eyebrows. But India captain Rohit Sharma backed the experienced pacer to come good and cited his performance in IPL 2022. He also revealed why Siraj was not called up to the squad.
Virat Kohli nicely warmed up for the T20Is against Australia with an extensive net session here on Sunday. Kohli, as often is the case, was among the first ones who headed into the nets. The focus was clearly on playing the short ball as he faced a barrage of rising deliveries in his 45-minute session. Having roared back to form with a much awaited hundred in Asia Cup, the spring in Kohli's stride was palpable. The star batter had stepped out to even the likes of Rashid Khan in the Asia Cup displaying supreme confidence. He was in a similar mindset in the nets on Sunday, charging down to the spinners for those straight hits down the ground.
With the T20 World Cup squad already picked, India skipper Rohit Sharma wants his players to get out of their comfort zone and explore new things about their game in the six home games against Australia and South Africa ahead of the ICC showpiece next month. Rohit feels players can now afford to extend their 'limits' without the pressure of selection. The management will be giving rest to the likes of Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh over the six games but by and large it will have a full squad at its disposal.
