Ravichandran Ashwin stunned the cricket world after the third India vs Australia Test in Brisbane as he announced his retirement from international cricket. Being the highest wicket-taker among active bowlers with 537 scalps, many expected Ashwin, 38, to continue for some more time. However, he retired with two Tests left in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy. The timing of his retirement was questioned by greats like Sunil Gavaskar. Ashwin was used on only one of the first three Tests in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. India captain Rohit Sharma latest said: "It just happened so that if you know where he felt that, 'if I'm not needed right now in the series, I'm better off."
Ahead of the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) head curator Matt Page hinted at 6 millimetres of grass being used on the pitch for the game, saying that surface will help both bowlers and batters. With the series level at 1-1, both teams will be playing the highly-anticipated Boxing Day Test from December 26 onwards, with an aim to secure an all-important lead and an edge ahead of the final Test at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
As the focus remains on under-fire veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, a few other members of India's batting unit haven't performed either. Kohli and Rohit's struggles with the bat in Australia have been a cause for concern but the talented Shubman Gill hasn't repaid the faith shown in him by the team management either. As Gill continues to search for his prime form, former India wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik has highlighted a 'technical flaw' in the batter's playing style.
Seamer Mohammed Shami will not be considered for India's fourth and fifth tests in Australia due to a knee injury, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) said on Monday.
With legendary off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announcing his retirement, 26-year-old spin-bowling all-rounder Tanush Kotian has been reportedly selected to join Team India's squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Although an official announcement is yet to be made, reports suggest that Kotian is set to depart for Australia on Tuesday and join up with the rest of the squad, ahead of the fourth Test in Melbourne from Boxing Day. But who is Tanush Kotian? And why has he been picked over more recognized names like Yuzvendra Chahal or Axar Patel?
Big milestones are available for Australian stars Steve Smith and captain Pat Cummins to hunt during the Boxing Day Test against India, the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with the superstars aiming to continue their brilliant run in the much-anticipated match. Australia fast-bowler Sean Abbott was effusive in his praise for Jasprit Bumrah, saying that the current generation is seeing a master at work, adding that his unusual bowling action being never tinkered is a big blessing. In the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy currently locked at 1-1, Bumrah has picked an impressive 21 wickets, while averaging 10.9, making him the leading wicket-taker overall in the five-match series. "He has any delivery on tap, the accuracy, the pace. He just ticks all the boxes, session after session. There's not been one time when he's bowled in this series where he hasn't been putting pressure on the Australian batsmen. I take my hat off to him, it's been unreal. We're seeing a master at work."
