USM beat Zamalek on penalties to win CAF Confederation Cup

JOHANNESBURG: Algerian club USM Alger beat Egyptian hosts Zamalek 8-7 on penalties in Cairo on Saturday to win the CAF Confederation Cup for a second time. Zamalek won the second leg of the final 1-0 through a fifth-minute penalty from Palestinian Oday Dabbagh to level the aggregate score at 1-1. USM had won the first leg 1-0 last weekend, also through a penalty, converted by Ahmed Khaldi eight minutes into added time. In the penalty shootout, each team successfully converted their first seven kicks, then stand-in Zamalek captain Mohamed Shehata blazed over. Before taking his kick, Shehata struggled to place the ball on the penalty spot, then USM goalkeeper Oussama Benbot came forward from his goalline to further delay the kick. The next USM penalty fell to Congolese substitute Glody Likonza, and he scored with a kick into the left corner that goalkeeper Mohamed Awad got his fingertips to, but could not stop. USM also won the African equivalent of the UEFA Europa League in 2023, pipping Young Africans of Tanzania on away goals. It was the first Confederation Cup final failure for Zamalek after two triumphs over Moroccans Renaissance Berkane. The first in 2019 was won on penalties and the second in 2024 on away goals. USM became the first club to win a final in the second-tier African competition after taking a 1-0 lead into the second leg. Dolphins of Nigeria, Club Africain of Tunisia and Berkane were unable to defend the slender advantage in previous title deciders. The return match between Zamalek and USM was often a scrappy affair with many delays for injuries and arguments with the excellent Gabonese referee over his decisions. Less than two minutes had elapsed when Cameroonian Che Malone fouled Palestinian Adam

History tilts odds in favor of Zamalek for CAF Cup

JOHANNESBRUG: History favors Egyptian club Zamalek when they seek to overcome a 1-0 deficit against Algerian visitors USM Alger on Saturday in the CAF Confederation Cup final second leg. In 22 previous editions of the African equivalent of the UEFA Europa League, three teams have built solitary-goal leads at home in the first leg of title deciders. But Dolphins of Nigeria (2005), Club Africain of Tunisia (2011) and Renaissance Berkane of Morocco (2019) all surrendered their slim advantage after the return match.

Angry Libyan football fans set GNU building on fire during protest

TRIPOLI: Angry fans of a football ‌club in Tripoli protesting a referee decision set fire to the facade and garden of the headquarters of Libya’s Government of National Unity (GNU), two eyewitnesses and a local TV channel said on Thursday. The violence flared in the capital on Thursday evening, after fans of Tripoli’s Al-Ittihad football club took to the streets to protest a referee’s decision to deny them a penalty kick in a match against Misrata’s Swehly club. The match was played in Tarhouna’s city stadium, around 65 km (40 miles) southeast of Tripoli. A Reuters journalist who watched ‌the match said ‌it was stopped in the 87th minute ‌after Al-Ittihad protested the decision. Al-Ittihad fans at the match stormed the pitch, sparking a riot that damaged property and injured stadium guards, the journalist said. Pictures on social media showed guards with wounds on their heads, legs and hands being rushed to a hospital in Tarhouna. In Tripoli, according to two eyewitnesses, Al-Ittihad fans who had been watching the match at their club’s complex marched toward the GNU building and ‌set off fireworks “to express their anger,” ‌causing the building’s facade to catch fire. “The situation was very chaotic, with thick ‌smoke rising into the sky, and cars in the area ‌were trying to leave before things got worse because the fans were very angry,” one of the eyewitnesses said. Video footage posted on the Internet and from Istanbul-based Libya Al-Ahrar TV channel showed flames engulfing the glass ‌facade of the GNU building and thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky. There was no immediate response by the GNU to a Reuters request for a comment.

US relaxes visa bonds for World Cup fans

WASHINGTON: The United States said Wednesday it would ease its system of demanding bond payments of visa applicants for certain fans seeking to come for the World Cup. Under one of President Donald Trump’s many initiatives to crack down on migration, the United States has begun asking people from 50 developing countries to hand over anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000 for a US visa, refundable once they return home. The State Department said it would waive the bonds for team members competing in World Cup matches in the United States as well as for fans from competing countries who already have tickets and signed up for a priority system set up for visas. “We remain committed to strengthening US national security priorities while facilitating legitimate travel for the upcoming World Cup tournament,” said Mora Namdar, the assistant secretary of state for consular affairs. She said the Trump administration wanted to organize the “biggest and best FIFA World Cup in history.” “Today’s announcement from the US State Department further demonstrates our ongoing collaboration with the US Government and the White House Task Force for the FIFA World Cup to deliver a successful, record-breaking and unforgettable global event,” a FIFA spokesperson said in a statement. Five countries that qualified for the World Cup are among those whose nationals are required to pay visa bonds: Algeria, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Senegal and Tunisia. At least two other countries that have qualified for the soccer showcase have seen nearly total bans on entry into the United States under Trump: Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, and Iran, which the United States and Israel attacked on February 28. The Trump administration has also
