Exuding confidence, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam on Monday said the team's players are driven by a strong "hunger" for success as they set their sights on clinching the coveted Asia Cup and World Cup titles. Fresh from their 4-1 home series win over New Zealand, Pakistan are currently in pursuit of the top spot in ODI rankings. They may very well dethrone Australia as the world's No 1 side with a 3-0 whitewash over Afghanistan in their Asia Cup build-up series beginning in Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
DUBAI: Some of the world’s biggest cricket stars will represent the six DP World ILT20 franchises in Season 2 of the UAE’s biggest cricket league — the second most-watched in India.
Veteran Indian cricket team spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was all praise for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after they registered a historic victory over New Zealand in the second T20I encounter on Saturday. He pointed out how franchise cricket has slowly been decreasing the gulf between top sides and associate nations before mentioning Rashid Khan and Afghanistan's meteoric rise on the global stage. “UAE beating New Zealand is a big achievement and it's also showing us what franchisee cricket has succeeded in doing. There is hope for the next generation cricketer coming from countries that aren't mainstream test nations and that's good news for the game. When @rashidkhan_19 broke into the IPL, Afghans weren't a feared cricketing nation at world cups but now no one can refuse that fact. The future may well see other nations having representations at the IPL and turning the fortunes of the game in their respective countries. Well done UAE,” he wrote.
Out-of-favour Pakistan leg-spinner Usman Qadir has opened up on his friendship with captain Babar Azam, which dates back to their U-15 days. Usman, who is the son of Pakistan great Abdul Qadir, hasn't played for Pakistan since the T20I series against England last year in September. He also failed to find a place in Pakistan's squad for the Afghanistan ODI series and the subsequent Asia Cup. Qadir clarified that his friendship with Babar has nothing to do with his inclusion in the team, and it is up to the selectors to make the call.
The men's senior selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), led by Ajit Agarkar, will meet in New Delhi on Monday to discuss the Asia Cup squad. Indian captain Rohit Sharma will also attend the meeting. India's team has yet to announce their squad for Asia Cup and World Cup amid concerns over the injury of their key players, while nations like Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh have already named their Asia Cup squads. England and Australia have also announced the provisional squad for the World Cup 2023.
Pakistani players are reluctant to sign a long-term central contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after differences over sale of licensed digital rights of players between the two parties. Though the last set of central contracts of the players expired on June 30, the PCB has so far not been able to convince them to sign the new contracts. The Pakistan squad has already reached Sri Lanka for their One-Day series against Afghanistan and for the subsequent Asia Cup.
