Afghanistan pulled off the biggest upset of the 2023 World Cup as they defeated defending champions England in Delhi on Sunday.
Afghanistan stunned the cricket world as they defeated defending champions England in the Cricket World Cup 2023 match on Sunday. Afghanistan's victory put the top 4 race wide open, with England suffering what was their second defeat in three matches in the tournament. While the result will have huge ramifications on the way Afghanistan are seen in the remainder of the tournament, for the team's spinners Rashid Khan and Mujeeb ur Rahman, the victory was for people back home, especially in the way of recent events.
England captain Jos Buttler admitted his side was "outplayed" by Afghanistan in their ICC World Cup 2023 clash in Delhi. Afghanistan skittled out England for 215 to claim their second Cricket World Cup victory, eight years after defeating Scotland in Australia. This time, the defending champions were on the receiving end. Buttler said his side failed to execute well with both bat and ball as Afghanistan were on top of its game.
Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott hopes Sunday's World Cup win over England will "encourage boys and girls" to take up cricket even though the country's Taliban rulers ban women from playing sport. The 69-run victory will be regarded as one of the biggest shocks in the history of the tournament as Afghanistan ended a 14-match World Cup losing streak. "It's not just cricket that the guys are playing for," said Trott, who recognised the significance of a win for a nation reeling from recent earthquakes and the Taliban's fractious international relations.
Afghanistan's remarkable 69-run win over defending champions England at the World Cup will give them the belief they can go toe-to-toe with cricket's leading nations for years to come, coach Jonathan Trott said.
NEW DELHI : England captain Jos Buttler has called on his players to show resilience and character in the wake of a stunning loss to Afghanistan that has put their World Cup title defence on shaky ground.
ALGIERS: Algeria on Sunday stepped in to host matches involving the Palestinian football team due to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Algeria has agreed to stage “all official and non-official matches involving the Palestinian team’s preparation for qualification to the 2026 World Cup and 2027 Asian Cup and to assume all associated costs,” an Algerian football federation statement announced. The move came after a request to the Algerian authorities by Jibril Rajoub, the head of the Palestinian football federation. The first of these games comes next month when Palestine will ‘host’ Australia in Algeria on November 21 in a 2026 World Cup qualifier. Palestine are in World Cup Asian preliminary qualifying Group I with the Australians and Lebanon. The 2023 Asian Cup starts in January with Palestine set to face the UAE, Iran and Hong Kong in Qatar. At least 2,670 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip in a blistering air assault launched by Israel last week after Hamas carried out a bloody attack on Israel that left more than 1,400 people dead.
RIYADH: Broadcasters from about 115 countries have committed to broadcasting the upcoming Riyadh 2023 World Combat Games, it was announced on Sunday.
