"Wasn't Trying To...": Ex India Star Rips Into Shubman Gill After Hyderabad Test Loss

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel has raised concerns over youngster Shubman Gill's batting approach in the first Test of a five-match series against England in Hyderabad.

Gill scored just 23 runs across two innings in the first Test as England defeated India by 28 runs on Sunday, December 28. Chasing a target of 231, India were bowled out for 202 on an extended final session on Day 4.

Patel criticised Gill's approach in Hyderabad, saying that he was not trying to play shots at all. "The way Shubman Gill was batting, especially the approach we saw in the first innings, he wasn't trying to play shots at all.

If you don't try to score runs, international-level bowlers won't give you too many loose deliveries," Patel said on Colors Cineplex.

India vs England 3rd Test Day 4 Live Updates: A huge final lead will be in sight on the Indians when they resume their second innings against England in the third Test in Rajkot on Sunday. Yashasvi Jaiswal (104 retired hurt) and Shubman Gill (65 not out) put India in command of the game on Day 3 after the hosts bundled out England for 319 and took a first-innings lead of 126 runs.
Yashasvi Jaiswal's dream season just got better as he singlehandedly seized the initiative from England with a sizzling century, putting India in complete control at the end of third day's play in the third Test. Jaiswal's (104 retired hurt off 133 balls) second ton of the series was beautifully complemented by Shubman Gill (65 batting, 120 balls), who curbed his natural aggression as India ended the day at 196 for 2 in 51 available overs. The left-handed opener, who will be torch-bearer of Indian batting for the next decade, scored his third Test hundred in only seventh Test appearance before the blazing blade was brought to a halt by back spasms that forced him to retire.
Veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara hit the nets in the practice area of the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot amid the ongoing third Test between India and England at the same venue. The out-of-favour India batter was preparing for his next Ranji Trophy team Saurashtra's upcoming game against Manipur, set to begin at the C ground of the newly-named Niranjan Shah Cricket Stadium on Friday. As ironic at it may sound, Pujara hit the nets after India lost three early wickets in the morning session.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has backed Gujarat Titans (GT) to qualify for the playoffs in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), despite captain Hardik Pandya's trade to Mumbai Indians. Under the guidance of former India pacer Ashish Nehra, Hardik led GT to the IPL title in their first season in the tournament in 2022. The franchise also reached the final of the tournament last year, losing to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Ahmedabad. Despite Hardik's departure, Gavaskar feels that Nehra can still inspire GT in the upcoming season with a new captain in Shubman Gill at the helm.
Star India opener Shubman Gill shared a picture with ace Tennis star Rohan Bopanna on Saturday. The right-hand batter took to his official Instagram handle and posted a photo with the World number one men's doubles player, calling him an "Absolute legend". In the summit clash of the Australian Open men's doubles competition, Bopanna and Matthew Ebden beat Italy's Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in straight sets 7-6, 7-5 in a thrilling encounter.
Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra was critical of batters Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer's recent performances, saying that time is running out for them and both have one more knock left before things takes turn for worse for the young batting duo. India is taking on England in the second Test at Visakhapatnam. Both Gill and Iyer failed to make an impact once again, throwing away their wickets after decent starts for 34 and 27 runs respectively. This continues their recent poor run of form in Test cricket.
