With India set to take on Australia in their first warm-up game of the T20 World Cup, star batter Virat Kohli was all smiles during the team's training session at the Gabba in Brisbane. The former India captain was seen having fun some with his teammates -- KL Rahul, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh. Kohli, who recently scored his 71st century after a wait of nearly three years, was showing off his funny dance moves, leaving Rahul, Arshdeep and Bhuvneshwar in splits.
Indian batter Shreyas Iyer climbed three spots to reach number 33 and spinner Kuldeep Yadav also jumped five places to enter the top 25 in the latest ICC Men's ODI Players Rankings issued on Wednesday. Shreyas Iyer finished as the leading run-scorer in the recently-concluded ODI series against South Africa, scoring 191 runs in three matches with a century and fifty. Kuldeep Yadav also emerged out of the series as the leading wicket-taker with six scalps in three matches.
India's stand-in ODI captain Shikhar Dhawan is happy that his team was able to show a lot of character on tough pitches during the three-match series against South Africa. After losing the first game in Lucknow, India clinched the series with two one-sided victories over the Proteas. "The boys showed great character on such tough batting pitches. The bowlers were clinical today," Dhawan said after the match. "I am proud of the boys, the way they played in the series. The way they carried the responsibility and showed maturity. Would like to thank the support staff." The first game in Lucknow was a forgettable one for the 'Men in Blue' especially because of the number of catches that they missed.
India gave a good account of their enormous depth as a young and inexperienced side stunned a strong South Africa unit by seven wickets in third ODI here on Tuesday to secure a memorable series win. The spin trio of Washington Sundar (2/15), Shahbaz Ahmed (2/32) and Kuldeep Yadav (4/18) picked the right lengths on a slow Kotla pitch to bundle out South Africa for 99, the Proteas lowest ODI total against India. The home team batters, led by Shubman Gill (49), chased a paltry 100-run target in 19.1 overs. The series loss further jeopardised South Africa's chances of a direct qualification for the ODI World Cup next year.
The second-string Indian team would look for some stability from its openers as the hosts aim to punch above their weight and seal a memorable series victory against South Africa in the third and final ODI in New Delhi on Tuesday. After going down narrowly in the series-opener, the might of the Indian white-ball depth was in full display as the hosts won the second ODI comfortably to level the three-match series 1-1. But the Indian think tank would be a little concerned about the opening pair of captain Shikhar Dhawan and young Shubhman Gill.
