Roy Keane was the man everyone wanted to meet at Old Trafford on Monday night before and after Manchester United’s shock 2-1 victory over rivals Liverpool.

Erik ten Hag’s men surprised everyone with a superb team performance against last season’s Champions League finalists. Goals either side of half-time from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford earned the Red Devils their first three points of the 2022-23 season following back-to-back defeats against Brighton and Brentford. Keane, arguably the greatest captain of the Premier League era and one of the best players in Man Utd’s history, was part of Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football (MNF) panel alongside Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher.

And it was patently clear all evening that Keane is true football royalty. Shortly before MNF came off air, Sky Sports showed a brilliant clip of Keane being embraced by various stars of the football world – and even rapper Stormzy! “It’s been a really good night for Manchester United,” host Dave Jones said, “it’s been like a special homecoming for you, Roy! “Let’s remind everyone: starting with [Cristiano] Ronaldo, who gave Jamie the cold shoulder, Casemiro the new signing has been in and had a hug, he met Manchester United’s Lionesses, and we signed off with Stormzy!” The clip amused Neville and Carragher, who quipped: “He’s like the mayor of Manchester, shaking everyone’s hand!” Jones added: “Roy Keane… this is your life!” The Irishman then shook hands with Carragher and Neville.
