Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has criticized skipper Rohit Sharma's tactical decisions following India's first Test defeat to New Zealand in Bengaluru. Rohit faced significant backlash for his captaincy, particularly after New Zealand managed to add 137 crucial runs for the eighth wicket in their first innings. The criticism continued on Day 5 of the match. With New Zealand needing 107 runs to win, Rohit opted to bring on Ravichandran Ashwin, India's most successful bowler at home, only after 10 runs had been scored. Instead, he utilized Mohammed Siraj, who remained wicketless across two spells totalling seven overs, yielding no results.

Earlier, India were out for 46 in the first innings while New Zealand had scored 402. The visitors' bowlers then struck back in the final session. India captain Rohit Sharma was frustrated man as New Zealand outplayed them on all fronts on the opening day of the 1st Test in Bengaluru. After opting to bat, India collapsed to a record low total of 46 at home as Matt Henry and William O'Rourke took five and four wickets respectively. To make things worse, India were a bit sloppy on the field as the New Zealand batters scored quick runs in response. India's new ball bowlers failed to create much, but when the chance did arrive, the fielders failed to capitalise.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was oblivious to the cheers of a handful of spectators as he walked across a soaked M Chinnaswamy Stadium turf on Wednesday, chatting intensely with assistant coach Abhishek Nayar. There was no pressing demand for him to spend an hour at indoor nets as rain held up the first day's play of the opening Test between India and New Zealand. After all, he is going through a roseate phase in Test cricket for over a year now.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made its preference clear as the India squad for the Test series against New Zealand was announced. While Rohit Sharma remains the captain of the team, the BCCI selection committee officially put the vice-captain tag on pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who has been widely recognised as India's most important player at present. Though Bumrah doesn't have much captaincy experience, he has been a part of the leadership group for a long time.
