There were a lot of questions over the potential wicket-keeping choices for the Indian cricket team in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. The selectors finally decided to drop KL Rahul and opt for two specialist wicket-keeper batters - Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson. However, considering the team composition, it seems like only one of them will find a place in the playing XI. Former Indian cricket team spinner Harbhajan Singh said that he was impressed by Pant's return following his near-fatal car accident but chose Samson as his pick due to his brilliant run of form in the ongoing IPL 2024.

The ongoing IPL 2024 has seen multiple young cricketers producing brilliant performances and he cited the examples of Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma to show that their good run of form did not translate into their selection for the tournament. Uthappa was asked about the exclusion of Gill and Rinku Singh from the 15-member squad and he said that the senior cricketers should have moved on after the 2022 T20 World Cup and this year, the team should have gone with youngsters who are in good touch.
India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad saw some bold decisions being taken by selectors as an out-of-form Hardik Pandya earned the nod while players like Shubman Gill and Rinku Singh were snubbed. Though the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed in a press conference that Hardik's selection was down to a lack of alternatives, a report later revealed that the selection committee was under pressure to pick the Mumbai Indians all-rounder. BCCI secretary Jay Shah has now opened up on the T20 World Cup squad selection, saying players can't be picked purely on the basis of IPL form.
