Emergency services made desperate attempts to save a couple who tragically died after their car was submerged in water, a coroner's court has heard.

Elaine and Philip Marco were found after their Mercedes became trapped on Queens Drive, in Liverpool, last Saturday (August 26).

An inquest into the deaths of Elaine, 75, and Marco, 77, opened at Liverpool's Gerard Majella Courthouse this morning (September 1).

The court heard police were called out to the scene at 9.21pm on Saturday, the Liverpool Echo reports. Officers received reports that a vehicle had become submerged in water on Queens Drive, between North Mossley Hill Road and Dovecot Road, and that it was believed people were inside the car.
