Manchester United fans on social media were sent into frenzy on Thursday evening when fans had thought the former Manchester City winger Ferran Torres had dropped a major hint about Frenkie de Jong's future at Barcelona.

United have chased De Jong's signature for over two months with Erik ten Hag identifying him for his midfield. Manchester United have agreed a deal with Barcelona for De Jong, 25, and hope to sign the midfielder whilst on tour in Australia.

Reports have further emerged today that although a fee has been agreed, no agreement has been made between the player and United.

Spanish sources have told the Manchester Evening News that De Jong has accepted he will have to leave Barcelona and the club's president, Joan Laporta, is waiting for the transfer to go through before sanctioning moves in the market.
