Luke McCann sets new Irish record at Diamond League

Ireland's Luke McCann smashed the national 1,000m record to finish seventh at the Monaco Diamond League on Wednesday evening, as Jake Wightman took victory with a new world lead time.McCann, 24, clocked 2:16.40 to break the previous record of 2:17.58, which was set by Olympian David Matthews in September 1996, a full two years before McCann was born.In February this year, McCann lowered the Irish 1,000m indoor record to 2:17.40 while competing in the USA.Scotsman Wightman had to settle for Commonwealth Games bronze in Birmingham on Saturday, ending hopes of a summer hat-trick.But he showed what he is capable of in Monaco with a run of 2:13.88 - the ninth fastest of all time and a meeting record - to pip Canada's Marco Arop.American Clayton Murphy completed the top three.Additional reporting: PA

The 24-year-old Olympic champion javelin thrower has recovered from the "minor" groin strain injury he had suffered while winning a historic silver medal during the World Championships in Eugene, USA, last month. A top-three finish here will ensure Chopra a berth in the Diamond League Finals in Zurich on September 7 and 8 as he is at fourth spot in the standings with seven points. He had finished second in the Stockholm leg -- his first-ever podium -- on June 30.
