In a massive blow to the FAI, top candidate for the Republic of Ireland managerial role Lee Carsley has rejected an offer, according to reports.

Carsley had been the first choice to succeed Stephen Kenny to start the rebuild after a difficult three years for Irish football.

According to reports in the UK, Carsley will remain in his role as England Under-21 manager. The first to report the story was the Daily Mail.

The publication said Carsley hopes to be in contention for the England senior job when Gareth Southgate's reign ends, most likely after the 2024 European Championship.
