Riding on a sensational century in his Test comeback, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant on Wednesday re-entered the ICC rankings at an impressive sixth position but India skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli slipped in a major shake-up in standings.

Pant (731), who smashed a stunning century in the opening game of the two-Test series against Bangladesh in Chennai, was placed sixth, while opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (751), moved up to fifth thanks to a half-century in the first innings of the Test match.

India skipper Rohit Sharma retained his place in the top ten, though he moved down five places with two underwhelming scores.

He has 716 rating points. Kohli also dropped five spots to go out of the top-10 and he is now placed 12th in the standings. The Sri Lanka-New Zealand Test in Galle brought about top 10 bowling rankings shifts, with Prabath Jayasuriya solidifying his reputation as one of the game's best spinners, moving five spots into eighth after a nine-wicket haul.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, the torchbearers of transition, will have to be India's driving force in their quest to lord over an unsettled New Zealand in a three-Test series, beginning here with the first match here on Wednesday.  The baton has not been completely passed, but Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are certainly running their last lap and these two young superstars will have to show that they can carry forward the legacy of the titans.
Top-order batter Rachin Ravindra said on Monday that nullifying the twin threat posed by senior spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja will be crucial to New Zealand's success in the three-match series against India. Ashwin and Jadeja together have grabbed over 800 Test wickets, and are among the most experienced bowling pairs in world cricket at present. "They've got consistent bowlers who bowl in an area for a long period of time. I mean, you see the two spinners who play consistently, Ashwin and Jadeja, they're two very accomplished bowlers. You know, they can bat too, which makes it a little bit hard,” Ravindra told reporters on Monday.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir is not too concerned about the recent lukewarm form of Virat Kohli, insisting that the star batter remains as hungry as he was when he made his debut and should not be judged after every match. Kohli has made only one fifty, a 76 against South Africa at Centurion in December 2023, in his last eight innings, and him regaining his touch is crucial for India against New Zealand in a three-Test rubber starting on Wednesday and during the five-match series against Australia next month.
Two of the fines captains Indian cricket has seen, Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni are among the few leaders who have won the national team ICC titles. While Dhoni won a total of three ICC trophies during his reign, Rohit opened his account in the T20 World Cup 2024. Over the last year or so, Rohit's stocks have risen dramatically as the captain of the Indian team, especially considering the way he has led his troops. However, choosing one between the two is a tricky subject, especially for someone like Shivam Dube who has played under both captains.
The T20 World Cup 2024 final is still fresh in the minds of fans. Be it Suryakumar Yadav's catch, pacers' exemplary bowling in the death over or Virat Kohli's resolute half-century, there are many factors that helped India beat South Africa in the title-decider. However, captain Rohit Sharma has now revealed another factor that played a big role in India's win. During his appearance on Kapil Sharma's comedy show, Rohit revealed that wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant thought of a brilliant ploy to slow down things in the middle, helping India disrupt South Africa's rhythm which turned tide in India's favour.
Suryakumar Yadav is enjoying his time as India T20 captain and dropped enough hints on Saturday about his ambitions of leading an IPL franchise is near future. Mumbai Indians would ideally like to retain Suryakumar but being a current India captain, it would also be interesting as to what is his expectation from the five-time champion outfit. Hardik Pandya grabbed the limelight last year when MI removed Rohit Sharma unceremoniously to put the colourful Baroda all-rounder on the hot seat, the move that backfired badly.
