ICC Men's T20 World Cup: Namibia To Face Asian Champions Sri Lanka

Namibia will look to extend their meteoric rise in the world of cricket when they come across Sri Lanka, who will be brimming with confidence after their Asia Cup victory last month.

Round one will begin with a bang as the first of 45 games will pit Group A favourites, Sri Lanka, against Namibia, a team with solid ambitions of making it to the Super 12 stage.

The two teams are set to compete on Sunday against one another at a significant competition for second time. In the previous T20 World Cup, Namibia and Sri Lanka were drawn into the same group and faced off in their first game.

Gerhard Erasmus and his team won't be remembering this match with fondness because Sri Lanka comprehensively overpowered them; Namibia was bowled out for 96, and the Lankans finished off the chase with seven wickets and more than six overs to spare.

Disciplined bowling and an unbeaten half-century by Kusal Mendis powered Sri Lanka to a nine-wicket hammering of Ireland in their opening Super 12 match at the Twenty20 World Cup on Sunday.
GEELONG, Australia : Kusal Mendis blasted a timely half-century and Wanindu Hasaranga took three wickets as Sri Lanka eased into the Super 12 phase of the T20 World Cup with a 16-run win over the Netherlands in Geelong on Thursday.
The wicketkeeper-batsman's swashbuckling 79 from 44 drove Sri Lanka to 162 for six on a sunny afternoon at Kardinia Park before the talismanic Hasaranga helped restrict Netherlands to 146 for nine, despite an unbeaten 71 from opener Max O'Dowd. The win put Sri Lanka top of Group A ahead of second-placed Netherlands, while knocking the winless United Arab Emirates out of the tournament. Sri Lanka were stunned by Namibia in their first qualifier, but steadied their campaign by thrashing the UAE. "We knew that when we came to the World Cup we would be the favourites in this group," said captain Dasun Shanaka.
From the demeanour of the captain, Gerhard Erasmus, on the eve of the big day in Geelong, it was difficult to tell there is T20 World Cup survival on the line.
Asia Cup title is a thing of the past now, insists Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka, saying their only focus right now is to produce a perfect performance in their must-win match against the Netherlands to qualify for the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup. Stunned by Namibia in their tournament opener, Sri Lanka bounced back strongly to beat UAE by 79 runs in a first round Group A game. But occupying the third spot in Group A, Shanaka's men will now have to win their last match against table toppers Netherlands on Thursday to ensure their place in the Super 12 stage. "...I think Asia Cup champions is history, so it's just a title for us. There is no pressure at all. We just need to concentrate on our own performances and what we need to do to make sure that we get into that second round after the next game." "We know our strength. The first game we didn't execute in that match, so we got beaten by Namibia. But we are a far better team from the team we performed in the first game," Shanaka said ahead of the match against the Netherlands.
