"Don't Think Gautam Gambhir Has A Natural Captain": Ex New Zealand Star's Verdict On Suryakumar Yadav

Former New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris believes that Suryakumar Yadav is only a temporary captaincy option for India, with Gautam Gambhir ideally hoping to build Shubman Gill as the nation's future long-term captain.

Suryakumar Yadav - fondly known as SKY - was appointed India's T20I captain by Gambhir after the retirement of Rohit Sharma from the shortest format.

Gill was appointed vice-captain in both the T20Is and ODIs for the Sri Lanka tour, prompting Styris to believe that more long-term plans are in play. "I think he's a short-term option.

I don't think Gambhir has a natural captain amongst the players that he has right now," said Styris, speaking to India Today. "He's buying himself time as to who will be the next long-term captain," continued Styris. "You know, someone like Gill I think could do the job for 10 years for India, but he's not quite ready right now, so I think it was a really smart decision to bring in someone with a bit more experience," Styris added.

Newly appointed India head coach, Gautam Gambhir began his career in the new role with a 3-0 T20I series triumph against Sri Lanka. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav's captaincy received its due credit in the post-series dressing room speech given by head coach Gambhir while all-rounder Hardik Pandya also had some special words for his Mumbai Indians teammate. The comments from Gambhir and Hardik were shared by the BCCI in a video published on social media.
Indian cricket team fans had their hearts racing as they saw T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav bowling the 20th over of the match against Sri Lanka, who needed just 6 runs to win the match. Suryakumar, who had not bowled a single over in the match until that moment, bowled the final over of the 3rd T20I and gave away just 5 runs, forcing the match into Super Over. As Surya's final-over heroics, with the ball, went viral, fans also hailed head coach Gautam Gambhir, saying a new era has started.
Two matches, two wins, as Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav help India kick-off the new era in T20I cricket with a series win against Sri Lanka. Though the weather gods made the match quite tricky for the Indian team, with the second innings being reduced to 8 overs due to rain, the Indian batters did really well to take the team home and secure an unassailable 2-0 series win in the series. Right after the conclusion of the 2nd T20I, however, India head coach Gambhir was spotted in an intense chat with skipper Suryakumar. The visual made many fans wonder what the two might be discussing.
Team India's newly promoted T20I skipper isn't in the scheme of things as far as ODI cricket is concerned, and BCCI selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar had no hesitation in confirming that during a press conference on Monday. Agarkar, who held a joint press conference with the new head coach Gautam Gambhir, said that Surya's name wasn't even discussed as the likes of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant returned to the ODI fold. Though Suryakumar was a part of India's team for the 2023 ODI World Cup, fair to say that he is way down in the pecking order at the moment.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and skipper Suryakumar Yadav displayed their wide array of strokes as India took an unassailable 2-0 lead, winning the rain-curtailed second T20I by seven wickets with nine balls to spare in Pallekele on Sunday. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and new captain Suryakumar couldn't have asked for a better start to their new roles as the Indian team played like true T20 World Champions outplaying Sri Lanka in all departments. Despite Shubman Gill's absence due to neck spasm and another failure in the format for the ever-hyped Sanju Samson (0), Jaiswal (30 off 15 balls) and Suryakumar (26 off 12 balls) didn't even break a sweat in their short but tricky chase of 78 in 8 overs after another fine effort by bowlers had restricted Sri Lanka to 161 for 9.
India all-rounder Axar Patel says new T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav is a bowlers' captain who allows them the freedom to execute their plans. The spin all-rounder also said that the team will look to maximise its batting combinations in the ongoing series against Sri Lanka. Suryakumar and India made a winning start to the three-match series here on Saturday when they crushed hosts Sri Lanka by 43 runs in a high-scoring opening T20I.
