Indian ODI team has been dealt a blow as senior seamer Deepak Chahar is likely to miss the remaining two games due to a twisted ankle sustained during a training session before the first ODI against South Africa in Lucknow.

Chahar wasn't a part of the Indian playing XI as Shikhar Dhawan's side lost by nine runs in the opening match with the visitors scoring 250 in just 40 overs. "Deepak has sustained a twisted ankle but it's not too serious.

However a few days of rest might be advisable," a source privy to selection issues, told PTI on conditions of anonymity. "So it will be team management's call if they would like to risk Deepak as he is in T20 World Cup stand-by list.

In any case, if there is requirement there, it would be a priority." As of now, Jasprit Bumrah's replacement in the T20 World Cup squad is Mohammed Shami, who is slowly and surely getting match-fit and is expected to fly to Australia within the next three to four days.

Improving the pitches for domestic cricket is also high on his agenda. "We will look to improve on what we can do to reduce the injuries to players," Binny told reporters here after taking over the BCCI presidency from Sourav Ganguly. "Players getting frequently injured is a concern, and we wish to get to the bottom of it all and see how it can be changed for the better.
India's road to the T20 World Cup has been marred by injuries. It started with spin allrounder Ravindra Jadeja being ruled out due to injury and was followed by star pacer Jasprit Bumrah missing the marquee event, for the same reason. Even Deepak Chahar, who was on the standby list, is reportedly out of the T20 World Cup with an injury. In their absence, other pacers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh will have to take extra responsibility. However, former Pakistan cricket team pacer Wasim Akram feels that Bhuvneshwar Kumara will struggle in the T20 World Cup.
Deepak Chahar has been ruled out of the upcoming T20 World Cup due to a back injury. Chahar, who was among the stand-by players, was expected to make the main squad in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah but it is understood that his back injury will take time to heal. Pacers Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur will now join the Indian team in Australia, ahead of the team's first match against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 23.
Finding Jasprit Bumrah's replacement isn't the easiest of tasks. The marquee Indian pacer is out of the T20 World Cup 2022 with a back injury and will probably be out of action for months. There isn't a like-for-like replacement for Bumrah in the Indian team considering the qualities he brings, but there remain a couple of options for the selectors to choose from for the showpiece event in Australia. Among the top candidates, the choice is most likely to be made between Mohammed Shami and Deepak Chahar. Former India cricketer Parthiv Patel has given his opinion on the subject, suggesting which player among Chahar and Shami would he want to get the nod.
Thakur did play the T20 format for India during the time Hardik Pandya was doing his long and intense rehabilitation program but poor economy rate of 9.15 has basically pushed him out of the national team radar. "Of course, it's a big setback. Every player dreams to play in the World Cup, not just play but win it as well," Thakur said on the eve of the second ODI against South Africa.
