David de Gea has posted a cryptic tweet on social media following a report that Manchester United could look to offer him a short-term deal at the club.

The Sun claimed United were 'planning an embarrassing U-turn by pleading with dumped keeper De Gea to return on a short-term deal.' It was suggested that Erik ten Hag's side was worried that they would be short of a worthy backup 'keeper when Andre Onana goes to the Africa Cup of Nations in the new year.

There is still uncertainty over whether Onana could miss as many as nine matches early next year following Cameroon's qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations, with the goalkeeper free to make his own choice on whether he wants to represent his country at such a prestigious event.
