Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud ran riot in the morning session of the first Test against India in Chennai on Thursday. After Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto invited the hosts to bat, Mahmud made early inroads with the ball, dismissing three of India's top four batters.

He took the wickets of Rohit Sharma (6), Shubman Gill (0) and Virat Kohli (6). However, it was Gill's dismissal which sparked a debate on social media, with fans claiming that the youngster is the Babar Azam of Indian cricket.

It was an unusual dismissal as the ball was sliding down the leg side but Gill managed to get an edge to it. Here's how internet reacted: Shubman Gill proves me right everyday that he is Babar Azam of Indian Cricket who is playing in team just because of heavy PR investment and not because of his performance !!

Pakistan Test skipper Shan Masood backed star batter Babar Azam to come good during the home Test series against England, saying that he does not look out of form and is still team's number one batter. The series, starting from October 7 with the first Test at Multan, will be important for Pakistan not only from ICC World Test Championship standpoint, but also regarding form of their most premier batter. In his last eight Tests, Babar's performances have been sub-par, scoring 317 runs at an average of 21.13, without a fifty to his name. His best score is 41.
Babar Azam, in a late night post on Tuesday, announced that he is stepping down from his role as the white-ball captain of the Pakistan cricket team. Babar Azam was earlier the all-format skipper of Pakistan. He stepped down previously as captain after Pakistan's poor show at the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. Fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi succeeded him as the T20I captain but was soon replaced by Babar, who was reappointed as the skipper in March 2024.
Indian cricket's next generation of batting talent is quietly making waves, and star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has high hopes for two of the country's brightest young stars — Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Both players impressed during India's recent 2-0 Test sweep against Bangladesh, with Jaiswal finishing as the top run-scorer of the series, accumulating 189 runs at an average of 47.25, while Gill closely followed with 164 runs at an impressive average of 54.66, including a century in the first Test.
Former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria didn't hold back in his scathing criticism of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Pakistan team following their humiliating Test series loss to Bangladesh. It was Pakistan's first-ever Test series defeat to Bangladesh and Kaneria expressed his frustration, even going so far as to say that "a mohalla team is better than them."
Shubman Gill poses a very odd statistic. From 2020 onwards, Gill's average is the highest among any Indian Test batter when you take scores from only the second innings. However, his career Test average is merely 35, meaning that he tends to underperform in the first innings. It proved to be the same again in the first Test between India and Bangladesh, as Gill recovered from a duck in the first innings to a fine 119 in the second. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar expressed his bewilderment at this repeated occurrence.
