Afghanistan stunned Sri Lanka by eight wickets with almost half the overs in hand in the opening game of the Asia Cup T20 tournament in Dubai on Saturday.

Sri Lanka was dismissed for 105 in the last over before Rahmanullah Gurbaz (40) and Hazratullah Zazai (37 not out) smashed 83 runs in the powerplay to help Afghanistan reach 106-2 in 10.1 overs.

The islanders, who are the hosts the tournament in the UAE, didn’t recover from Fazalhaq Farooqi’s twin strikes in the maiden first over after being sent in to bat.

The left-arm fast bowler trapped Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka off successive deliveries and took 3-11. Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi said his team will be no pushovers in the Asia Cup.

Sri Lanka and Pakistan would be squaring off in the final of Asia Cup on Sunday evening at the Dubai International Stadium. Sri Lanka did not lose a single match in the Super 4 stage while Pakistan lost only one and that loss came against Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka in a match that was pretty much a dress rehearsal for the summit clash. However, it is important to remember that for Friday's contest against Sri Lanka, Pakistan had rested Naseem Shah and he would be back for the Babar Azam-led side. The toss has played a crucial role in this Asia Cup as well, and Sri Lanka have won all their matches in the ongoing tournament when they have chased. Their only loss in this edition came in the group stage against Afghanistan and it was when they batted first.

However, the match between the Babar Azam-led Pakistan and the Mohammad Nabi-led Afghanistan was also witness to some untoward incident between Asif Ali and Fareed Ahmed Malik. It happened in the 19th over after Pakistan batter Ali was dismissed by Malik.
