The 'Spirit of Cricket' question came into the picture once again as rare incident happened at the Cricket World Cup. In a match in Delhi, Sri Lanka star Angelo Mathews became the first player in international cricket to be timed out.

In the Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka Cricket World Cup match, Angelo Mathews was left stunned as rival skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed for 'timed out'.

It all started when Angelo Mathews came in to bat in the 25th over, being bowled by Shakib Al Hasan. The former Sri Lanka captain soon realised that the strap of his helmet was not alright.

As he waited for the right helmet, Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a timed out. Angelo Mathews was absolutely livid. He pleaded with the umpires but Shakib Al Hasan did not withdraw his appeal.

After 46 days and 48 matches, huge totals, shock wins, heartbreaking losses, records and controversies, the Cricket World Cup ended on Sunday. KOLKATA : The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), custodians of the game's laws, said on Saturday that the umpires had made the correct call in declaring that Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews had "timed out" in his side's World Cup clash against Bangladesh.
A huge controversy erupted in the ongoing Cricket World Cup earlier this week as Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews became the first batter in the 146-year history of international cricket to be timed out. Mathews arrived at the crease after the two-minute deadline, following Sadeera Samarawickrama's dismissal, due to an equipment malfunction. The former Sri Lanka captain was left fuming as he lashed out at the fourth umpire, and also labelled Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan's act as "disgraceful".
The Pakistan cricket team's ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 semi-final hunt is all but over. Though theoretically, Pakistan can still claim the 4th spot in the points table, the methodology isn't quite practical. With a 283-run win required to topple New Zealand via Net Run Rate, Pakistan need to put a formidable total on the board if they bat first. Wasim Akram, one of the greatest Pakistani cricketers of all time, came up with a hilarious plan that will enable Pakistan's semi-final qualification.
The Angelo Mathews 'timed out' controversy remains one of the most discussed incidents from the Cricket World Cup 2023. Mathews was dismissed without facing a single ball in the match against Bangladesh after failing to 'be ready' to face the bowler in the stipulated time of 2 minutes. Though Mathews claims that it was the helmet malfunction that prevented him from being ready to face the bowler, veteran Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik feels that the all-rounder could've faced a delivery before asking for a replacement helmet.
The 'timed out' controversy involving Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews and Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan has refused to die down, with views on the debatable form of dismissal coming in from all spectrums of the sport. Opinions remain divided on the matter, with some suggesting that Mathews was right to be annoyed since it was a helmet malfunction that led to the delay while others feel Shakib had the right to appeal as the matter was within the rule books. Now, India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has given his take on the controversial subject.
