Horse racing-Champion trainer Stoute to retire at end of season

Michael Stoute will retire at the end of the 2024 Flat season, the 10-times champion trainer said on Tuesday.

Stoute, who began his career in 1972, has won 16 British Classics, including six Epsom Derby triumphs. His first Derby success came in 1981 with Shergar, a horse who was later kidnapped and never recovered.

"I have decided to retire from training at the end of this season," Stoute, 78, said in a statement.

"I would like to thank all my owners and staff for the support they have given me over the years. It has been a great and enjoyable journey."

Stoute also won 13 classics in Ireland along with some of the world's biggest races including the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in France, the Dubai World Cup and the Breeders' Cup in America.
