How Aston Villa duo John McGinn and Tyrone Mings have performed under Steven Gerrard compared to Dean Smith is a “worry”, says journalist Dean Jones.
Villa as a whole have not been great this season, but Jones is particularly concerned about McGinn and Mings.
Yes, though Gerrard was quite critical of the latter at the start of the season.
“When Tyrone is back at his best and looks me in the eye and shows that he’s ready to play, he’ll get opportunities,” the Villa manager told BBC Radio West Midlands (via GOAL) in August when talking about Mings.
Nevertheless, Mings has still played almost 10 games in all competitions for the Villans this term, with Diego Carlos currently out injured.
As for McGinn, he has been a mainstay in Gerrard's starting XI.

Jones does not think McGinn and Mings are playing at the same level they were under Smith.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT about the £137,000-a-week Villa duo, the journalist said: "Under Dean Smith, there was a different style of leadership and obviously a rapport with the fans, and I think that was often reflected by players raising their levels at certain times. The change in players like McGinn and Mings is a worry."
To get McGinn, Mings and the rest of Villa's players performing consistently again, it may take a change in the dugout. That is what the club's board may be thinking right now.
According to Football Insider, the Midlands outfit are currently weighing up sacking Gerrard.
