Majorca disaster: Four dead after building collapse as more feared trapped

More people are feared to be trapped in a building collapse which has claimed the lives of four at a Majorcan beach resort.

Emergency responders including police and firefighters rushed to the scene of the incident, identified locally as the Medusa Beach Club in Playa de Palma. Officials confirmed that bodies remain at the site.

The number of fatalities rose to four last night and officials are confirming up to 21 people have been injured, seven "critically". There is not yet any information available as to whether they are workers or holidaymakers, reports the Mirror.

Although initial reports suggested a false ceiling had collapsed, it later emerged the first floor had collapsed into the ground floor. A spokesman for a regional emergency response coordination centre said: "Four people have died and 21 have been injured in the collapse of a building in Cartago Street in Playa de Palma."

Emergency responders are still at the scene. Seven of the injured are said to be "critical" as police sources have put the number of the injured at at least 27, with fears many have been crushed under rubble. A local court has sent a forensic expert to the scene.

One of the victims has been named locally as Abdoulaye Diop, a Senegalese migrant living in Majorca and working as a nightclub doorman who in 2017 saved a man who was drowning in the sea at Playa de Palma.
