He has recovered from his anterior cruciate ligament injury. The Indian team has played 10 matches so far in the year, losing six of them and drawing four. They have so far played three games under Manolo, who was appointed head coach in July in place of Igor Stimac, and lost once while drawing twice.

India may still be searching for their first win under Manolo Marquez nearly four months into his tenure but goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu on Wednesday backed the head coach and said qualifying for the next AFC Asian Cup is the team's "minimum" target. The Indian football team's last victory was a 1-0 win against Kuwait in the World Cup Qualifiers on November 16 last year. Since then, the side has struggled, losing seven of its last 11 matches and falling in FIFA rankings from a sub-100 position in July 2023 to 125.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has called for an independent inquiry into the internal procedures that were followed and the personnel that were involved in former head coach Igor Stimac's contract renewal. Stimac's contract was terminated on June 17 after AIFF senior officials held a virtual meeting with the Croatian manager. Following the termination of his contract Stimac had filed a claim of $920,000 before the FIFA Football Tribunal.Stimac and AIFF recently agreed to a compensation settlement for terminating the Croatian from the position of head coach.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Tuesday called for an independent inquiry into former head coach Igor Stimac's contract renewal procedures after the Croatian and the national body agreed to USD 400,000 compensation settlement for terminating him from the job. During the Annual General Body meeting of the AIFF held here, the members discussed the renewal, termination and eventual settlement of claims under the federation's contract with Stimac. "The members called for an independent inquiry into the internal procedures that had been followed and the personnel that were involved when the head coach's contract had been renewed in 2023 on unapproved and unfavourable terms," the AIFF said.

Indian football team's hopes of winning the Intercontinental Cup title for the third time were dashed as it lost to Syria 0-3 in the last league match of the three-nation tournament here on Monday.
