Thomas Partey apologises for lack of intelligence following red card against Liverpool

Thomas Partey has apologised for showing a lack of intelligence after his sending off capped a miserable night for Arsenal against Liverpool.

The Gunners went into the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final in confident mood having escaped from last week’s match as Anfield with a goalless draw.

After a bright start, however, Liverpool were able to keep their opponents at arm’s length following Diogo Jota’s opening goal in the 19th minute and sealed their place at Wembley when the Portugal international struck again in the closing stages.

There was still time for Arsenal’s misery to be compounded when Partey, who appeared as a substitute despite only just having returned from AFCON duty with Ghana, picked up two yellow cards in the space of three minutes.

Partey will now be suspended from Sunday’s Premier League match against Burnley and with Mikel Arteta’s midfield options already severely limited, the 28-year-old’s rush of blood could not have come at a worse time for his manager.

Apologising via a message on Instagram last night, Partey wrote: ‘I am responsible for anything that happened and will take all the critics.

‘I should be more intelligent not to get in a challenge already booked but this is my personality. I like to fight for every ball.
