How a newspaper article changed CWG-bound boxer Sagar Ahlawat's life

Manny Pacquiao marked the beginning of Sagar Ahlawat's boxing dream. Seven years later, the 20-year-old is gearing up for the men's +92kg super heavyweight competition at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where he will be donning the India jersey for the very first time. "I was not good at studies. Mere se padhai hoti hi nahi thi. (I just couldn't study) So, I started looking for something else to do after 12th class," Sagar told PTI. Born to a family of farmers, Sagar had no connection to sports. But one fine day, he came across a full page newspaper article about the famous bout between Mayweather and Pacquiao, considered to be one of the most anticipated sporting events in history. As he read about the two boxing greats and their achievements, it became clear to Sagar where his future lay.

India vs West Indies 2022, 2nd ODI: India aim to fix middle-order woes, clinch series

Shikhar Dhawan will again look to make a statement as the Indian team, made up of fringe players, take on the West Indies in the second ODI here on Sunday. Having won the first game by three runs, another victory will give India a successive ODI series win in the Caribbean. Be it Dhawan and comeback man Shubman Gill's aggressive opening stand, or Mohammad Siraj's emergence as the leader of the bowling attack in the absence of the experienced Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, India ticked all the boxes on Friday to go 1-0 up in the three-match series. First up, it was about Gill as the highly-rated opener, returning to the ODI fold after more than 19 months, seized the opportunity with both hands with a career-best 64. Picked ahead of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan, Gill made batting look easy when most of them struggled after the ball got softer at the Queen's Park Oval.

Jaspal Rana says 'boycott' British shooting products after sport's exclusion from CWG 2022

Till now, barring the 1970 Edinburgh edition of the Games, shooting always featured in the quadrennial event before the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and the Birmingham organisers decided to drop the 'optional sport'. Rana, winner of four Asian Games gold medals (1994 Hiroshima and 2006 Doha) and the most successful Indian athlete at the Commonwealth Games (15 medals, including nine gold), feels that since the home team "cannot compete" with Indian marksmen, they are trying to "eliminate the sport" from the quadrennial games.

Commonwealth Games 2022, scheduled to be held in Birmingham from July 28 to August 8. Aiming for gold, she has moved on from the disappointing outings at the Worlds, and is now ready to excel at the CWG 2022. Asked about the level of the competition at the CWG as many world class boxers are not participating, Lovlina told IANS on the sidelines of the ceremonial send-off of the Indian contingent in New Delhi: "Every international event is tough. I don't want to demean by saying that CWG is not a tough tournament. You have to be prepared for tough bouts. Like every international tournament, you need to be mentally strong to handle the match pressure while facing very experienced and decorated boxers.

India vs West Indies 2022: Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal's emphatic 'no' to 'cricket in shorts' googly

cricket be played wearing shorts? Yuzvendra Chahal doesn't think so. In fact, he had an emphatic "no" for an answer when a scribe alluded to suggestions that cricketers could be better off wearing half pants instead of trousers in the future, given that the game is often played in extreme heat. The "cricket in shorts" question was a googly that the leg-spinner was not expecting after India's three-run win over the West Indies in a last-ball thriller at the Queen's Park Oval, which put the visitors ahead in the three-match ODI series. March 2022 was the hottest in India since records began more than 100 years ago but notwithstanding the sweltering weather, cricket, like always, continued to be played in the country. Chahal, one of India's leading white-ball spinners, explained why the status quo should be maintained.
