The scout using Football Manager to find players for Guinea-Bissau

Jack Charlton led the Republic of Ireland from international also-rans to the World Cup quarter-finals. When appointed manager of the national team in the late 1980s, he cast the net for players far and wide, searching through genealogies and tracking down anybody with Irish roots. It was a controversial approach, but it worked. Fast forward thirty-odd years and another Jack C is undertaking similar searches, but this time on behalf Guinea-Bissau. For a country with a population of just two million, the need to expand the pool of players is understandable. This is where Jack Coles plays a crucial role.

David Tepper has a brilliant financial mind. Running the Panthers though …

The Carolina Panthers, the last winless team in the NFL, remained that way on Sunday. A 42-21 loss at the high-flying Miami Dolphins was the team’s most lopsided defeat in a year full of them. Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and receiver Tyreek Hill were their usual destructive selves in the passing game – they combined for 163 yards and a touchdown – and tailback Raheem Mostert added 115 yards and two scores on the ground. This year’s No 1 overall pick, Bryce Young, hung in gamely at quarterback but could not come close to keeping pace. Losing to the Dolphins is no disgrace – Miami have the best offense in the NFL and are 5-1 this season – but it emphasized how far Carolina are from being relevant. Besides, it’s the overall picture of the season that is depressing for Carolina fans: their team have a 0-6 record, the first time they’ve reached that low since 1998.

Chinese tennis is booming through talent, investment … and distractions

A year ago this month, the 26-year-old Shanghai native Zhang Zhizhen, who hits a booming serve and plays with his long hair kept at bay beneath a headband, made history by becoming the first Chinese man to break into the top 100 of tennis’s world rankings. Four months later, he was joined by his compatriot Wu Yibing, who promptly went on to become the first Chinese man to win a title on the men’s tour – overcoming the American phenom Taylor Fritz in the process.

England’s attack coach says booing fans are wrong about Owen Farrell

Women’s Super League: talking points from the weekend’s action

The return of England forward Beth Mead naturally stole the headlines after 11 months out following an ACL injury, but it was the Arsenal star’s quick resumption of her burgeoning relationship with match-winner Alessia Russo that was the highlight. “Let’s hope so,” said the manager, Jonas Eidevall, when asked whether their connection for Arsenal’s second in a dramatic 2-1 defeat of Aston Villa was the start of something special in red and white. “We see them together in their national team, so it’s not a hope that is based on just fantasies; we have seen that work in reality.” Mead’s inspirational entrance lifted Arsenal off the title race ropes and confined Villa to a worrying third consecutive defeat. Last season Carla Ward’s side lost just seven times in the league but, without the injured Kenza Dali and suspended Kirsty Hanson, they are struggling to create chances for last season’s top scorer Rachel Daly.
