This year’s Australian Open suffered arguably its biggest blow when Nick Kyrgios suddenly announced his withdrawal from the tournament because of a knee injury.
Twenty-four hours before he was due to start his campaign, the Australian No 1 called a press conference out of the blue and told reporters that he was not fit enough to compete.
He was accompanied by his physio Will Maher, who revealed that an MRI scan showed a tear in Kyrgios’s lateral meniscus, which caused a painful cyst to develop.
Kyrgios, 27, will now undergo arthroscopic surgery in the coming days. If all goes well with the recovery, he plans to return to the tour for the prestigious Indian Wells Open in early March. “I am extremely disappointed,” Kyrgios said.
