Mansfield Town bring kick-off forward to lunchtime as English Football League tackles energy bills crisis

English Football League (EFL) clubs are looking to beat soaring floodlight bills of more than £100,000 by playing earlier to limit their usage, with League Two side Mansfield Town the first to do so.

The club’s home game against Walsall on Saturday, October 15 will be brought forward to 1pm from 3pm after they made a special application to the league following advice from safety advisory groups. “The club is endeavouring to mitigate the forthcoming, considerable increase in energy bills,” Mansfield’s statement explained. “As part of these efforts, the earlier kick-off time will enable the club to discern whether significant savings can be made on floodlight usage and other energy costs.” All EFL clubs are expected to discuss the use of floodlights next week, after
