Fifa’s move to stop seven European countries wearing the “One Love” armband is backfiring here in Qatar, with Germany staging a demonstration before their match against Japan that was designed to shame the global governing body.

The German federation has already threatened to take legal action amid concerns among all seven countries — England and Wales included — that Fifa was not following its own rules when it threatened that any captain wearing the rainbow armband would be given a yellow card.

On Monday, only hours before England’s game against Iran, the seven-strong group backed down and instead wore the regular tournament armband.

But on Wednesday Germany’s players placed hands over their mouths during their national anthem and wore rainbow stripes on their warm-up tops
