Champions League: Chelsea draw Real Madrid, Manchester City land Bayern

Chelsea will play Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals and Manchester City will face Bayern Munich after Friday’s draw gave the Premier League’s two remaining clubs among the hardest possible tasks.

The teams that progress from those ties will play each other in the semi-finals, raising the possibility of an all-Premier League meeting for a spot in the final, which will be played in Istanbul.

Madrid got past Liverpool 6-2 on aggregate in the last round, after a 5-2 win at Anfield, and the holders are trying to win the competition for a 15th time.

Bayern, six-times winners, beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 on aggregate to progress and are the club where City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, was in charge from 2013-16. Bayern are top of the Bundesliga, seven points ahead of Leipzig, whom City defeated 7-0 this week with the help of five goals from Erling Haaland, to secure an 8-1 aggregate win.

In the other ties, Internazionale will face Benfica and Milan will play Napoli. Chelsea will play away in their first leg next month, whereas City start at home. João Cancelo, on loan at Bayern from City, is eligible to face his parent club.
