The Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou described Yuki Kobayashi as a great investment as the 22-year-old defender was signed to become the fifth and youngest of the club’s Japanese contingent.

Only hours before Japan delivered its stunning World Cup victory over Germany, Celtic strengthened their connection to the Far East by officially announcing that Kobayashi had signed a five-year contract.

Kobayashi is a left-sided centre half who will apply serious pressure on Carl Starfelt, Moritz Jenz and Stephen Welsh, who have all played there alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers this season.

Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi all arrived in Postecoglou’s first two transfer windows and now their countryman will follow suit pending the formality of securing international clearance.
