As Andy Murray reflected on one of the most astonishing matches of his career backstage at Melbourne Park on Tuesday, his thoughts turned to his wife, Kim, and how thankful he was that she had not told him to give up this tennis lark.

She knows more than most the physical and mental toil her husband has gone through to defy the odds with a metal hip at the age of 35.

There have been occasions in the four years since Murray’s hip resur- facing operation that he has briefly pondered after tough losses whether his painstaking efforts are worth it.

There were no such thoughts on Tuesday as he basked in the aftermath of a vintage Australian Open rollercoaster that saw him somehow outlast
