Fabio Jakobsen (QuickStep — Alpha Vinyl) emerged unscathed from a chaotic climax to claim the first road stage of the Tour de France 2022 in a sprint finish. In victory the Dutch debutant completed his comeback from the live-threatening crash at the Tour of Poland two years ago, delivered on a great promise, and justified his favoured sprinter status — not to mention his team selection in the first place.

The wait is almost over. The riders are taking in the sights of Copenhagen; all Covid tests have been taken and eleventh-hour substitutes drafted in; Quick-Step have finished toying with fans over their lamentable will-they-won’t-they selection of Mark Cavendish (they won’t); at least seven teams have released new or limited edition Tour kits; even EF Education-EasyPost have awoken from their dreams of dragons and deigned to make their cutesy eight-man squad selection known a few seconds before the deadline… Some 3,328km of rampant riding over the roads of Denmark, France, Belgium and Switzerland now lie in store, along with 20km of cobbles, 18km of exposed sea bridge, over 53km of time trialling, 61 categorised climbs and no fewer than six mountaintop finishes.

Primoz Roglic, the man who was cruelly unseated from yellow on the last competitive stage in 2020, and Geraint Thomas, the rejuvenated 2018 champion, are among those fancying a pop at the youngster – and both Ineos Grenadiers and Jumbo-Visma have assembled fierce squads in an attempt to crack him.
A Manchester mum-of-four who shares yellow sticker hauls on TikTok has revealed her tips for finding a bargain.
Priscillia Ludosky (above) has been a Yellow Vest from day one. She is now participating in a programme created by personalities from the nonprofit world, the Academy of Future Leaders. The aim is to train in politics in order to eventually stand for election. Prisicillia, who long hesitated to enter politics because she does not trust "the institutions or the system", now feels that she cannot get there any other way. She believes that more and more Yellow Vests share her view, exhausted by the "lack of political response" to them turning out to protest every Saturday.
