Kobayashi Ryoyu called his two jumps "perfect". He registered 275 points, landing jumps of 145.4m and 129.6m. His gold is the first in the event by a Japanese athlete since Kasaya Yukio's victory at Sapporo 1972. Celebrated jumpers Karl Geiger of Germany and Stefan Kraft of Austria both failed to trouble the podium. That left the way open for Austria’s Manuel Fettner to take silver and Poland's Dawid Kubacki the bronze.
Unlike the PyeongChang 2018 final, which needed overtime and a shootout to separate winners USA from Canada, this final was finished in regulation time. The 3-2 scoreline may appear close, but the Canadians dashed to a 3-0 lead. The USA only managed to pull a second goal back with 12 seconds left on the clock. That didn't stop Canada's Sarah Nurse feeling the tension. She called it "the longest game of hockey I ever played".
Expectations for Ailing (Eileen) Gu were sky high even before the cauldron had been lit to mark the beginning of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022. But nothing could have prepared the world for what they were about the witness from the 18-year-old freestyle skier from People's Republic of China. In front of her home crowd, Gu won three Olympic medals, including gold in the women's big air and halfpipe, and silver in slopestyle.
Nils van der Poel blazed past his own world record to set a new fastest time of 12:30.74 in the speed skating men's 10,000m final at Beijing 2022. The Swede's disappointment in his 14th place in the men's 5000m at PyeongChang 2018 was such that Van der Poel took two years out of the sport. That time spent ultra-running certainly seems to have served him well.
Francesco Friedrich's time of 3:56.89 in the fourth heat put his sled almost half a second in front of compatriot Johannes Lochner in second. Christoph Hafer, also of Germany, steered his sled to bronze. Friedrich's third Olympic gold medal will go nicely with the ten world championships he has won in bobsleigh events. Friedrich pronounced himself “blessed” to be doing a something he loves as a job.
Scottish curling skip Eve Muirhead admitted perseverance paid off as she finally fulfilled a childhood dream with Olympic gold for Team GB.
But what are the stories behind the fantastic four who brought home Great Britain’s first curling gold in 20 years?
