West Indies Announce T20 World Cup Squad, Evin Lewis Returns To Team

Cricket West Indies (CWI) on Wednesday announced the squad for the upcoming International Cricket Council's (ICC) Men's T20 World Cup, which will take place from October-November this year. The panel confirmed fifteen (15) players who will represent the West Indies for the eighth ICC T20 World Cup, which will be played in Australia from October 16 to November 13. The West Indies are the only team to have won the ICC Men's T20 World Cup twice, in Sri Lanka in 2012 and in India in 2016. The West Indies' campaign to win an unprecedented third ICC Men's T20 World Cup title starts on October 17, when they take on Scotland in the first of three Group B fixtures played at the Bellerive Oval, in Hobart, Tasmania to qualify for the Super 12 phase of the tournament.

With 16 wickets in his last 10 T20Is since making headlines by playing a crucial role for IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals, left-arm pacer Obed McCoy is raring to go ahead of the 10th season of the Caribbean Premier League. The 25-year-old has switched sides this season and will be featuring for the Barbados Royals. "It's obviously a new franchise for me but I've settled well into the team because there are a lot of familiar faces in our camp. It's like a continuation from the IPL itself, and I am glad that the franchise has again put their faith in me. I feel at home here and that helps me in approaching games with confidence," expressed McCoy.

During the clash against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, Trinbago Knight Riders' Russell smashed 72 runs off 24 balls in their 6IXTY tournament clash, helping his side claim a three-run victory. The main highlight of the night was when the Caribbean all-rounder smashed six sixes in a row and completely turned the tide of the game into TKR's favour. Put to bat first, TKR made the most out of the given opportunity and left no stone unturned to put up a big score on the board.

The direct qualification road to ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 for the West Indies cricket team seems more distant now after two Super League points were deducted in connection with slow over-rate in the third ODI match against New Zealand. Pooran-led West Indies team was found guilty of not completing their overs in the allotted time and hence was penalized by docking two Super League points. The call was made by the match referee Richie Richardson even after allowances for the slow rate were considered.

Stand-in captain Tom Latham top-scored with 69 to lead New Zealand to a series-clinching five-wicket victory over the West Indies in the third and final one-day international series in Barbados on Sunday. Kyle Mayers' second one-day century and a blistering 91 by captain Nicholas Pooran took the hosts to 301 for eight in their 50 overs. But the Black Caps made light of an imposing target as four of the first five in their batting order scored half-centuries to reach 307 for five off 47.1 overs and underline their status as the top-ranked nation in the 50-over format.
